What We Do

SAFE Surgery seeks to improve the quality and accessibility of general surgery care in developing countries. We currently work in Uganda. We take a community-based approach to implementing our programs wherever possible, which we leverage alongside the expertise and dedication of a U.S. and Ugandan medical and public health professionals to raise the quality and accessibility of clinical care.
Although our programs are still being shaped through our local partnership, they also build off our history as "Safe Mothers, Safe Babies" and currently include things like community-based outreach and education, emergency referral systems to transport emergent cases to surgical care, the provision of essential surgical supplies and equipment to local healthcare facilities, and more. For additional information, look at some examples of our Three Delays projects below.

Addressing the First Delay
SAFE improves the demand for skilled medical and surgical care. We partner with communities to provide culturally-appropriate education designed in partnership with formal and informal community leaders. Examples include community-based plays, song-based education, and education provided to community groups and target populations (such as pregnant women, transportation drivers, and more).
